BOOK OF AIR
is a series of bundled compositions exploring each time specific musical parameters closely related to sound, frequency and time. How is the perception of sound influenced by time? What happens when we slow down time, stretch time, and so use time as a microscope to zoom in on sound? How do we relate to time in music as improvising and performing musicians? There are currently two projects in Book of Air: fieldtone and vvolk
…
VVOLK
“As a listener you experience one sound, one cloud, one texture, with slow moving details within. While getting deeper in the sound of vvolk, the perception of time fades. It is astonishing how improvised music can create such a timeless, and calming experience for the listener. This timelessness clearly has an effect on the physical body. After a concert of ‘vvolk’ you will leave with an altered body state.”
This is the second Book of air chapter performed by ‘VVOLK’. The music of ‘VVOLK’ is played by a group of 18 improvisers with roots in jazz and classical music. The group investigates performing and improvising music, in close relation to present time; what are the possibilities in playing music, when changes in this music pass by unnoticed? How do we as musicians relate to the running time of a performance? How does our hearing and memory react to these slow changes? As a result ‘vvolk’ let’s you experience music which is less perceived in the present time, but rather occurs in our memory of the past. This clearly challenges the improvising musicians, and makes audience and performers discover new territories in collective improvisation.
Inspired by the slow tempo and invisible motion of nature; how the seasons pace without sudden turns, slow and gentle. Seemingly still, yet always in motion.

FIELDTONE
Fieldtone refers to ‘roomtone’: Roomtone is the “silence” recorded at a location or space when no music is played or dialogue spoken. Every room is different, and these recordings always carry their unique character. The compositions of fieldtone are inspired by the tempo and sonic textures of specific nature locations. The sound to be found in nature has a very slow groove. A groove embedded by silence, and so slow it can almost only be felt while spending a few hours in the nature at sea, during a forest trip, in open fields, etc… It is this groove and the “silence” of nature that was an inspiration for the fieldtone compositions. By embedding this silent slowness into the compositions, the details of the sounds played become much more prominent. In this way the silence itself, amplifies the sounds that are played, and will also amplify the room surrounding the listener. The music is performed by an ensemble of string instruments supplemented with drums.
